Debian

 

The current release of Debian GNU/Linux -- version 3.0, code-named "woody" -- was released in July. To assist those who don't have the time or a fast Internet connection to download the distribution themselves, I am offering to burn and sell CD-Rs containing version 3.0r0 which, at the time of writing, is the current release version.

These CD-Rs, made from Official Debian images, are suitable for either installing a fresh system with Debian or upgrading a machine that is running a prior release of Debian; just boot from CD to install Debian from scratch,or, to upgrade, use apt-cdrom to add each disk to your /etc/apt/sources.list.

Here's what I currently offer. I only list disks on this page whose images I actually have locally, and which I can copy to CD immediately. The range on offer will expand as I obtain the official CD images of more of Debian's architectures. The current emphasis is on PC architecture.

Official Debian GNU/Linux 3.0r0 "woody" release

  • Official i386 binary disks 1 to 7.

    These disks contain all the binary packages comprising Debian for standard IBM PC-compatibles and an installation system which is bootable directly from the CD on machines whose BIOS is able to boot directly from CD-ROM, this includes all recent systems. Older machines can be booted into the installation system using the floppy images supplied on binary CD 1.

    If you have an internet connection and your system supports the isolinux booter (most do), binary disk 1 could be all you need. It includes the installation system and the most commonly used packages. The installation system can download any other packages you need over the network. The other disks include all the other packages in approximate decreasing order of popularity.

    On some systems, the first binary CD may not boot properly, in which case you may need to boot from one of the other CDs. Please refer to section 5.2 of the Debian GNU/Linux installation manual for details.

    Also available is a disabled USA-friendly version of disk 1. You most likely don't want this. It's just like the full non-US version, but with certain packages which may conflict with some US laws removed. The other disks don't have disabled versions because they don't contain any of the affected packages.

I also hold all the source disks locally for this distribution; listed 30r0-source-1 to 30r0-source-7, and the disabled USA friendly source disk referenced 30r0-source-1-US. Should you require these to rebuild this release of Debian.

Delivery

At present, many of our orders are despatched to UK addresses. This is because you can sometimes get whatever CD's you need in your local country, at less cost. I am happy though to deliver anywhere in the world, and deliver regularly to the USA and Europe. Disks are sent out in a secure envelope marked "CD Disks -- Please Do Not Bend". All disks come in their own strong plastic jewel case (not cheap cardboard covers). However if they get damaged in transit, let me know, and I'll send you a replacement at no charge.

Remember to look after your disks

As with any CD-R media, treat the disks properly if you want them to last. CD-R recording is done by briefly heating the dye layer with a laser. Therefore, do not store the disks where they could be subject to sunlight or direct heat.

Because these disks are CD-Rs, they cannot be absolutely guaranteed to be compatible with your CD-ROM drive. They should work fine in most modern CD-ROM drives and practically any CD writer or DVD drive.
